An open, versioned book in progress
The Driver's Seat
An Introduction to the Epistemology of LLMs
The book examines the conditions under which researchers can use large language models without surrendering the responsibility to judge, verify and organise knowledge. It is written for researchers and students in philosophy and the human sciences who work with these systems as users rather than as developers.
The book will appear chapter by chapter. Each public release will be stable and citable. Discussion may lead to a later version, but it will not silently rewrite the version already cited.
